The Saturdays singer Una Healy has partnered with McDonald’s to promote the powers of reading for kids…
Una Healy has teamed up with McDonald’s to launch its Happy Readers scheme for 2018. The campaign, now in its fifth year, wants to get more kids reading by giving away free books with every Happy Meal.
Una, who is mum to six-year old Aoife and three-year old Tadhg, showed off her new blonde hairstyle for the first time in the campaign imagery; a new look for the popstar since she announced her split from husband Ben Foden back in July.
Partnering with Penguin Random House and the Roald Dahl Story Company, the eight new books feature illustrations from Dahl’s long-time collaborator Quentin Blake, with stories that draw on some of his incredible characters, from Fantastic Mr Fox to the Enormous Crocodile.

“Roald Dahl’s amazing stories transported me to wonderful imaginary worlds with incredible, imaginary friends when I was little, and now they do the same for my children,” says Una. “Reading is such an important bonding time for me with my children. The McDonald’s Happy Readers scheme helps children and their families access free books, amazing adventures, and incredible creatures to really feed their imaginations, and their love of reading. It’s a fantastic scheme.”
Research from McDonald’s found that less than a third of parents read aloud with their children every day and, shockingly, one in eight children don’t own a single book. Despite that, 96% of parents agree it’s important that kids use their imagination, something the campaign hopes to encourage.
The books come free with every Happy Meal until 2nd October, so get one while you still can!
