Those road map playmats that kids love? If predictions are anything to go by, they could be the carpets of the future
What will the houses of the future look like? Interiors retailer Hillarys has grand predictions for homes in the years to come – and kids should be excited. Remember those road map playmats you used to love as a kid? With a little help from technology, they could be getting a modern-day upgrade worthy of your child’s wildest dreams.
Think of it like this – the carpet in your little one’s bedroom (or anywhere around the home for that matter) is hooked up to a smartphone app which at the touch of a button is transformed into a road map. No longer confined to one little square of felt, this map covers the entirety of the room’s floor space, with road layouts illuminated directly onto the surface of the carpet via LED displays. See if you can spot all the local services, from building sites to fire stations, shops to schools. And, of course, you’d have the option to change up the map, with a variety of options available via the app. It’s sure to entertain kids for hours as they create their own world of adventure. And the best thing? There’s no tidying up once playtime is over! Simply deactivate the app and the carpet goes back to normal.
As much as we’d like this to be real life, it is unfortunately just part of a project looking into the future of British homes. Tara Hall, spokesperson for Hillarys, commented on the future curtains concept:“The Road Map Carpet concept could be a great way for children to develop their imagination through play. We love the fact that this concept harnesses the latest technology but uses it to enhance traditional play, giving you and your children the best of both worlds.”
