Princess Charlotte’s christening at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, Sandringham on Sunday drew thousands of well-wishers as the Cambridges made their first public outing as a family of four
The Ceremony
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked from the Sandringham Estate to the Church with their children. Princess Charlotte was pushed by her mother in a pram the Queen had used for her own children, while Prince George walked alongside holding his father’s hand and delighting the crowds.
Like her brother, little Princess Charlotte was dressed in the hand-made replica of the Royal Christening Robe – a lace and satin christening gown made for Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, Victoria, the princess royal, in 1841.
And Prince George looked adorable, wearing an outfit from Rachel Riley that looked notably similar to that worn by his father when he first met brother Harry in hospital in 1984.
Charlotte was christened using the ornate silver gilt Lily Font which was transported from London for the first time, specially for Princess Charlotte’s christening in Norfolk.
Following the service, the duke and duchess hosted tea at Sandringham where guests were served slices of christening cake – one of the eight tiers from their wedding cake.
The Godparents
Princess Charlotte has two fewer godparents than her brother George, and none from within royal circles.
Lady Laura Fellowes: cousin of Prince William, niece of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
Adam Middleton: cousin of Catherine.
Thomas van Straubenzee: friend of William’s since prep school and accompanied William on his first official overseas tour to New Zealand
James Meade: friend of William’s since Eton
Sophie Carter: a close friend of Catherine’s who has attended charity events with her
This was the first time William, Kate, George and Charlotte have been seen together as a family of four and we look forward to seeing the official photographs taken by photographer Mario Testino after the service.
