Ever considered giving out plastic-free party bags at the end of your child’s birthday celebrations? Well, it seems to be the latest trend…
Plastic Free Party Bags is the brainchild of Croyden-based mother Emmeline Hundleby.
After her daughter brought home one too many favour bags filled with non-recyclable plastic toys, she took matters into her own hands.
What are plastic-free party bags?
Hundleby’s business offers customers the chance to send out party favours with a difference.
Rather than gifting guests with planet-toxic sacks filled with short-life toys, parents can offer an eco-friendly selection of goodies that benefit charities.
The paper and rope bags are sourced from India, where their production provides employment to 80 formerly homeless women. Profits generate income for children’s education and counselling services in the country.
Contents of the bags include seeds from the UK, whistles made of bamboo from Indonesia, natural pencils made in Thailand and other gender-neutral toys.

Why do we need plastic-free party bags?
Amongst a backdrop of global warming, deforestation and ocean pollution, choosing environmentally-friendly consumer options has never been more important.
According to a report for WWF created earlier this year, 4.9 million tonnes of plastic waste was generated in the UK in 2014. Forward projections suggest this will rise to 5.2 million in 2018.
From the latest available data (2014), only 26 per cent of plastic waste was recycled.
Indeed, initiatives are being taken across the country in an attempt to improve the situation. This includes the introduction of the 5p carrier bag charge and the government’s proposed plan to ban single-use wet wipes.
Plastic-free party bags don’t just help to keep pollutants out of rivers, oceans and landfill sites – the diversity of the internationally-sourced products encourages little ones to take an interest in the planet’s cultures, too.
Plastic Free Party Bags’ pre-filled options are suitable for children aged three and above and start from just 99p.
And with customisable packages and a plethora of beautiful fillings available, from spinning tops and aprons to chocolates, you could use them for adult celebrations too!
