New research has revealed which months are the priciest to welcome a new baby into your life

Comparison site Idealo has compared the prices of over 6,300 baby products, creating a ‘baby shopping price index’, revealing that October is the most expensive month of the year to pay for essential baby products.

Cheapest time to have a baby

At the other end of the scale, January is the cheapest month to have a baby, with new parents benefitting from the post-Christmas sales period.

The research examines the prices of everyday essentials, such as nappies and baby bottles through to more traditionally expensive baby products such as car seats and prams.

Seasonally, autumn months are the most expensive on average, followed by summer and winter, with spring the most affordable time of year to welcome a baby.

Most expensive time to have a baby

Here’s the months of the year from the most expensive to the least according to average prices across all baby categories and online retailers:

  1. October
  2. August
  3. December
  4. November
  5. February
  6. March
  7. September
  8. April
  9. July
  10. May
  11. June
  12. January

The average price of popular baby products fluctuates greatly through the year. The biggest saving to be had is with prams and pushchairs, with an average £111 difference between October, the most expensive month to buy one, and July, where you’ll find the lowest average price.

The study also looked at overall shopper demand for baby products as a whole, with November the highest month for shopper interest and purchases.

Idealo’s Katy Phillips commented: “Having a baby can put immense financial pressure on parents with the costs of nappies through to car seats quickly escalating.

“By comparing the latest price trends in this category, we hope our new Baby Shopping Price Index provides a helping hand to those families feeling the pinch the most.

“With September widely regarded as the most popular month to give birth due to high conception rates over the festive period, our advice to frugal parents is to conceive in April and avoid January if you want to snap-up a bargain in nine months’ time.”
