The Royal Mint has announced a new Gruffalo 50p coin will be available from 19th February.

To celebrate 20 years of Julia Donaldson’s famous book a new Gruffalo 50p is being put into circulation in the UK.

News of the new coin was revealed last year, but it’s now been confirmed special 50p will be available from 19th February 2019.

Taking to Twitter, the Royal Mint shared the news revealing: “There’s someone coming out of the deep dark wood… 19 February 2019!”

They also announced details of a competition to win one of 50 Gruffalo prizes.

It’s not yet been confirmed whether or not this new Gruffalo coin will be in general circulation, or if it is just a special edition for purchase from the Royal Mint.

Speaking about the coin, Token Publishing explained: “We aren’t sure whether this will go into circulation like the Beatrix Potter and Paddington coins or remain for collectors only (as with the Snowman just before Christmas) – we’ll keep you posted!”

Either way, we’re eager to get our hands on one as The Gruffalo is one of the best-loved childrens books of recent years.

Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Sheffler, the book tells the story of a mouse who takes a walk throught the forrest, stumbling upon the mysterious Gruffalo.

Initially published in 1999, the book as sold over 13 million copies and has won several literary prizes. The story has also been developed into an animated film and a West End show.
