Eating out on The Isle of Wight

The Isle of White is packed to the rafters with great places to eat and drink, many of which are very happy to welcome families. Whether you’re looking for a spot by the fire in a traditional pub, a play area for kids who can’t sit still, or just a nice bit of homemade cake, we’ve found five of the best from around the island.

The New Inn

With a log fire in the big stone hearth and a plethora of fine dining awards, the New Inn is a lovely spot for a winter lunch or dinner. There’s a special ‘smaller appetites’ menu for children, where everything is fresh, homemade and local They puree fresh food for babies and have high chairs; but it’s an old historic pub so there’s no baby changing. Apple Tree Café
Afton Park, Newport Road, PO40 9XR

A lovely café known throughout the island for its good traditional food, especially its wheat and gluten free options. Set in pretty gardens, you’ll also find a farm shop selling their own produce and organic baby food. The café is open Tues to Sun from 10pm to 4pm.

The Buddle Inn
St Catherine’s Road, Niton, PO38 2NE

This historic pub, dating back to the sixteenth century and an old haunt of island smugglers, is one of the oldest on the island. On the southernmost tip of the island and surrounded by stunning National Trust countryside it’s the ideal spot for a family walk followed by a hearty lunch. The chef will do children’s portions from the main menu and food is served this winter from 12 noon to 2.45pm and 6pm – 9pm.

This traditional seventeenth century coaching in is sure to be a hit with the children. It has indoor and outdoor play areas as well as good food, roaring fires and fine views from the restaurant.

The Griffin
High Street, Godshill, PO38 3JD

This large family pub in the beautiful village of Godshill, has won awards for its family facilities.  Food is served all day and the children’s menu comes with a take- home free toy to choose from the pub’s toy collection! If the weather’s fine, enjoy exploring the maze in the garden. You’ll also find a mini football pitch and a Wendy house. They have baby changing and plenty of high chairs.
