From planning a first birthday party to finding the perfect gift for baby, Carole Middleton offers her advice for celebrating this milestone event

Congratulations – you made it through the first year of parenthood! And whether you choose to keep this once-in-a-lifetime celebration cosy and intimate or you want a big birthday bash your friends and family will never forget, the key is to keep it fun-filled and personal.

Is there a character, toy or song that baby loves? If so, a theme can be a great way to personalise a party, as well as tie all the details of the day together. Beatrix Potter characters, such as Peter Rabbit, are a classic choice, or for something more broad, how about farmyard animals, a star theme or a circus-inspired celebration?

Be sure to cater to young babies of all ages on the day with child-friendly activities. Clear a space and fill it with playmats, rugs and cushions for baby and her friends to play, and choose simple, inexpensive activities such as sensory boxes, ball pits, finger painting and playdough to keep them entertained while you enjoy a slice of cake and a glass of fizz!

The key to hosting the perfect party is those thoughtful, finer details, so how about some party bags or favours? Bubbles, books and crayons are perfect for toddlers, while something cute – such as bibs, hats, socks or miniature teddy bears – are sure to get the seal of approval from parents!
